Lanzarote

Explorer 20–25 October 2027

Six days on volcanic trails built to take a road or gravel runner onto real, honest single track for the first time, while showing you the island most visitors never see. A small group, one coach all week, and a chef who happens to be her dad. You'll come home able to say you've actually seen Lanzarote, not just run through it.

On the trail with you, every single day

This is your coach Lisa on a typical Lanzarote route. She'll guide all the running sessions throughout the week, showing you the best views while teaching you how to move safely and efficiently on the trails.

what you'll run on

The terrain

Lanzarote cannot hide the fact that it is basically a volcano. Trails here run over hardened lava fields and compact volcanic gravel, not loose scree or exposed rock scrambles, so the footing stays predictable even when the landscape looks like it shouldn't allow that.

The week builds from rolling coastal paths into short climbs up the cinder cones ringing Timanfaya, with long stretches along black sand coastline where the Atlantic wind does a fair share of the work for you. Nothing goes past 300 to 500 meters of gain in a single day, in line with what we ask of an explorer camp.

If you can run 10km comfortably and don't mind some wind, an island thing, you're ready for this terrain.

Surface

Hardened volcanic gravel and lava rock, some coastal sand

Elevation

Rolling, 300 to 500m of gain per day

Technicality

Low. No scrambling, no exposure

Weather

Warm and dry, wind is likely most days

wednesday to monday

The program

Six days with a perfect balance between challenging training sessions, relaxation, exploring the island and workshops about all aspects of trail running.

WednesdayArrival

Arrival & settle in

Fly in whenever it suits you, we handle the transfer from the airport. In the afternoon, when everyone has arrived, we do a gear check, explore the neighbourhood, and get to know each other over dinner.

ThursdayDay 1

First trail day

Short, easy session on the volcanic terrain to find your legs, get to trust the gear, followed by a technique session on the lava paths so footing stops feeling foreign by the afternoon.

FridayDay 2

Building day

A longer route through the Timanfaya foothills, more climbing than Thursday, still well inside beginner range. Recovery session with Fede in the afternoon.

SaturdayDay 3

The big day

The main event of the week, a coastal to volcano loop and the longest run of the camp. This is what the rest of the week has been building toward.

SundayDay 4

Shake out & recover

A short easy run or full rest, your call. Massage with Fede, and the afternoon is yours: beach, nap, or just sitting still for once.

MondayDeparture

Wrap up

Light breakfast, a short debrief with Lisa on where to take your training next, checkout by midday.

This schedule gives you an idea of what this week can look like. Plans can shift with the weather or the wishes of the group. We aim to be flexible, but will make sure you get the maximum out of the week.

where you'll sleep

The accommodation

We'll be staying in a 5 bedroom villa with a private pool, just a 10 minute walk from the beach. There's a sun roof for those lazy recovery moments, and elegant indoor and outdoor eating areas for the home-cooked meals. The villa sits centrally on the island, with easy access to all the prime running areas it has to offer.

not sure you're ready?

Is Lanzarote your camp?

Explorer

You've just started trail running, mostly on gravel so far, or you're coming from road running and want a real first trail week. You're comfortable running 10km, on routes with at least 300m of elevation gain. That's the bar for this camp.

Want something with more climbing or distance instead? See the other camps or check the full level guide.

Or you've already experienced the unmatched atmosphere of our camps and want to join for some easy running in this unique environment.

Either way, this week is built around more than the running. You'll leave having actually seen Lanzarote, not just run through it.

before you apply

Lanzarote, specifically

I've never done a trail running camp before, is this a problem?

No, it's built for exactly that. This is our explorer camp, the terrain and daily distances are chosen so a first-timer coming from road or gravel running can handle the week without getting in over their head.

What if the pace ends up too easy or too hard for me?

That's what the eight-person cap is for. Lisa adjusts each day's route and pace to the group that actually showed up, not to a plan written months in advance.

Do I need trail shoes for Lanzarote specifically?

Yes. The volcanic gravel is firm but abrasive, a regular road shoe won't last the week or protect your feet the same way. We'll send a full kit list once you're signed up.

How can I prepare for the camp?

No specific preparation is needed, but if you want to improve your running or physical condition before the camp, you can contact Lisa about her one-on-one coaching or the Run Smarter App.

Will we be running all day?

No. Usually we'll do a run before noon, come back to the house for lunch, and have a rest. That leaves the afternoon free for other activities. The beach is a short distance from the house, but we can also go out and visit some of the spectacular sights on the island. Or we can spend some time talking about, and practising, all aspects of trail running such as orienteering, route planning, and racing, so you leave with a solid base for your own trail running journey.

Will there be time to explore the island?

Absolutely. After the training sessions there will be plenty of time to visit the sights on the island. Sites such as the Jardin de Cactus, the Timanfaya national park, the famous Papagayo beach and the various Cesar Manrique sites are all within reach. We'll plan those visits depending on the group's preferences and the weather.
